Halva is the ultimate traditional Cypriot dessert! With this recipe, we suggest enjoying it in its healthier version, using coconut sugar instead of regular sugar and adding the world’s number one spice – Turmeric! With this addition, our halva gets a golden natural color, while we also benefit from turmeric’s nutritional value.
Ingredients:
For the syrup:
- 800 gr water
- 250 gr coconut sugar
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 4 cloves
- 50 gr coconut oil
For halvah:
- 50 gr coconut oil
- 80 gr almonds without skin
- 300 gr semolina
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
Instructions:
- Put all ingredients for the syrup in a saucepan and stir for about 5 minutes in medium heat.
- In another saucepan, add 50 gr of coconut oil and almonds to roast in medium heat. Stir until light brown.
- Add semolina to the roasted almonds and stir for about 5 minutes again in medium heat.
- Add the syrup and stir for another 5 minutes reducing heat to low.
- Empty the mixture in a form with a hole in the middle and let it cool down.
- Serve on a large plate and garnish with strawberries, chamomile or almonds.
